My kind of walk works out best starting with an excellent cup of espresso.
A july walk in the oldest danish city, around the cathedral of the city of Ribe.
My inspiration comes from wonderful “Restlessjo” and her “Monday walk” themes
this area is perfect for an inspiring walking – can’t miss the historical atmosphere.
The cathedral of Ribe, translated from danish the real name is “Notre Dame Maria”
was built from 1110 -1134, earlier there was a wooden church from the 860s.
One of the 3 towers once long ago (1534) crashed down
the citizens couldn’t afford the money for a rebuild of the peak
it’s the reason for the different towers.
Impressive room – perfect for a rest before or after climbed the tons of steps of the tower.
View from the top of the flat tower of the cathedral.
Not far from the cathedral on the edge of the city of Ribe
where the royal palace “Riberhus” was placed, there isn’t much left of the castle
but lack of castle being counterbalanced by a sculpture of the former Queen Dagmar.
An amazing sculpture in my eyes.
The history of the queen is strongly related to the city of Ribe and she died at the castle
actually the sculpture is looking up toward the cathedral of Ribe.
Drake , you’re outdoing yourself , this summer!
I’m just fascinated by this post..

Beautiful and charming this city! Can you tell me what is written (graven) at the bottom of the statue? I like this statue a lot! 🙂 Thanks for sharing. 😉

So glad you enjoyed it… 🙂 🙂
The sculptor is Anne Marie Carl-Nielsen in 1914 who was married to the famours danish composer Carl Nielsen – in front written in danish and latin “Came with peace” – on the back of the pedestal is a relief of the same artists – and the year she came to Denmark and the year of death.
About the princess Drakomira who became danish queen 16 year old and died 23 years old about the year 1212 – very popular.

I guess or believe that an espresso is a perfect start – whatever we start… 😀
What a beautiful view from the top, Drake. I remember the coffee post you did some time ago, dark like, hot like… 🙂 🙂

Absolutly a visit worth this historical city of Ribe… 🙂
Oh, well done, Drake! You climbed the tower 🙂 🙂 I think that deserves another Espresso!
I really liked what I saw of Ribe, many years ago, but I didn’t get to see that statue. I agree- a beauty! Many thanks for joining me 🙂

First time I climbed the tower I was about 20 years,
okay I was faster up then than now… 😀 😀
The city of Ribe includes so much old danish history – the city smells of history at smells good – this sculpture is located a little bit west – there was originally – in ancient times – a castle where the sculpture stands now… 🙂
I fully understand, Drake. I climb very slowly these days 🙂
But ready for a “Jo and her monday walk” I hope… 🙂
I’m just finishing next Monday’s now 🙂 But this afternoon we did a little climbing. A future walk 🙂 🙂
Sounds interesting… 🙂
ciao! so lovely of you to share your walk in this danish city…i am charmed.
