Courtyard art

One and a half “stone’s throw” southeast from my home Colmar is located.
the city many connect with the heart of Alsace.
Often said to be in the middle of “the french pantry” too,
but has a string of lots of other qualities.

Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi a Colmar-born french/german sculptor,
best known for designing Liberty Enlightening the World, known as the Statue of Liberty
– and a lot of other artworks in France and in Amercica as well.
His childhood home have been Musée Bartholdi for nearly 100 years.

Inside the courtyard in front of the entrance of the building.
His impressive sculpture “Les grands soutiens du monde” is standing
– in english the “Great supporters of the world”.

    • Creator of lots of sculptures, especially in France and US. Among other things, the huge “The Lion of Belfort”, the Bartholdi Fountain in Washington DC, the Frieze and four angelic trumpeters on the tower of Brattle Square Church in Boston, the statue of Christopher Columbus, cast in silver for the 1892 Columbian Exposition in Chicago and all the goddesses of freedom around the world as well. 🙂

  1. Very nice and interesting. I am American, but I have ancestors from Alsace on both my mother’s and father’s side of the family. Of course, it is interesting to learn about the sculptor who created and contributed our Statue of Liberty, not far from where I live.

    • Besides the The Statue of Liberty in NY, so Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi (the famous son of Colmar and Alsace) have made several other sculptures in US too like: Marquis de Lafayette, statue at Union Square on Manhattan in NY – The Bartholdi Fountain in Bartholdi Park at US Botanic Garden in Washington DC – Frieze and the four angelic trumpeters on the tower of Brattle Square Church in Boston, Massachusetts – Statue of Christopher Columbus, cast in silver in Chicago, Illinois. 🙂

      • I will have to look up photos of these. We are not traveling much, of course, because of the virus, not even into Manhattan, and I am in the suburbs outside of Manhattan. I should be able to find photos online though. Thanks for all the information. 🙂
