Château du Hohneck in the Vosges, it is actually located in Lorraine
– but only one and half “stone’s throw” from Alsace and Colmar.
The third highest point in the Vosges, from where you can see in clear weather
– the entire Vosges range, part of the the swiss Alps,
the german Schwarzwald, the Jura mountains,
(on long distance) the Mont Blanc and far into the rest of France.
Therefore from ancient days been a strategic highly prioritized military area
– not far away the main road through the Vosges (east-west) always been.
The more “younger” of these roadtracks are from the Thirty Years’ War
– and was re-used during Napoleon’s many military campaigns.
