Open landscape

On the go either at sea or on my black mountain bike (here morning in Alsace) ,
there is very often a very specific swedish song in my small earplugs.

The swedish poet and musician Ulf Lundell,
he made this stroke of genius many years ago.
For us who are native norwegian, danish or finnish,
then it is piece of cake to understand swedish songs.
Unless we want to tease our swedish “brothers and sisters”.
Do not think it is translated into english, german or french.
In all humility, I have tried to translate the song into english.

I thrive best in open landscapes,
near the sea I want to live
A few months a year, so that the soul can have peace
I thrive best in open landscapes, where the winds pick up speed
Where the larks stand high in the sky and sing wonderfully
There I burn my brandy myself and season with St. John’s wort
And drink it with gusto, to herring and home-baked bread
I thrive best in open landscapes, near the sea I want to live
I thrive best in peace and freedom, for both body and soul
No one comes near me, who shuts up and steals
I thrive best when the day breaks, when the fields are filled with light
When listen to roosters in the distance, when it’s far to the nearest house
But still so close to the quiet and peaceful night
When sitting under the stars, can hear the laughter of the party
I thrive best in peace and freedom, for both body and soul
…..
I thrive best when the sea swells and the seagulls scream
When the beach is filled with seashells with sea music outside
When the clear and the simple can prevail as it pleases
When yes is yes and no is no and doubt is silent
Then I tie a wreath of leaves and place it on the nearest stone
Where runes were carved for our sake, sometime long ago
I thrive best in open landscapes
I want to live near the sea
