Former but now blocked stairwell to heaven.?
Probably all the wood worn away – both door and frame.
The floor above is no help either – even not a roof garden.
Over a thousand years before now – the castle was brand new.
If the rain comes, not the most dried place up there..

Do you have many more pictures? It looks interesting.
Many years since there was a roof – there is an infinite number of how many ruins there are in the Alsace area – just mention the ones without any roof. Some (like this) aren’t even mentioned on maps and not more structure left back after over 1000 years as this little bit. 🙂
Wow, such a neat story. I just looked it up! Is it open to the public? I love to see places like this, even though it would be much better to see them in a better condition, but still!
The area has really been strategically important in central Europe for many years – both Lorraine but especially Alsace. Many wars in the region – over more than a thousand years. That is why there are many, many countless castles and fortresses in the area. Many have been preserved, but even more are ruins – some are very, very dilapidated, almost gone. But many leave behind an almost humble appearance, where we sometimes have to guess – what it was over thousands of years ago. 🙂
amazing
Didn’t see a tag, so don’t know which castle it is

Ah, OK! Windstein springs to mind, and I know there are others I have visited
Windstein is a very good guess, slightly northern. Windstein has both an old and a new castle – both were very very ancient. The oldest ones are impressive that it still is (not functional) but still fantastic for us history geeks. 🙂
OK!
